Midfielder Alex Spinks rejoined Hassocks for a second spell in the summer after a couple of seasons with Lancing.

Here, the former Eastbourne Borough player talks about why he is nicknamed after snooker legend Dennis Taylor, his plan to introduce a transfer window to non-league football and the time he was a YouTube sensation…



Whats your nickname?
Den, because I pulled off this rascal pair of sunglasses that snooker player Dennis Taylor would’ve been proud of.

What team do your support?
Manchester United, because I am a glory hunter.

Who was your footballing idol growing up?
David Beckham.

What is the most valuable medal or award in your trophy collection?
Year Six Go-Karting Runners Up medal from Crawley Go-Karting

Best moment in your career?
Notching four from central midfield as an 18-year-old for Eastbourne Borough

Most embarrassing moment of your career?
Standing next to Harvey Blake in the showers.

Funniest thing you’ve seen in football?
Liam Benson in the showers.

Best player you’ve ever played with?
Gary Hart at Eastbourne Borough.

Best ground you’ve ever played at?
The Priestfield Stadium, Gillingham’s finest.

Favourite opposition team to play against?
I don’t have a preference

Who is the best trainer at Hassocks?
Matt Berridge.

Worst dressed player?
Harry Mills.

What’s the best thing about playing for Hassocks?
The location is great and the pitch maintenance is on another level.

What’s the best piece of footballing advice you’ve been given?
“Confidence is one of the key aspects in football performance. If you feel right, look right, prepare correctly mentally and physically then you will naturally play to the best of your ability.” That was from an ex-coach at Eastbourne Borough many years ago

If you could introduce one rule to football, what would it be?
I’d introduce a transfer window within the Southern Combination League or the non league pyramid in general. That way, it would develop more consistency within non league and stop an entire team walking out when their favourite manager leaves.

Messi, Ronaldo or another? Who is the greatest of all time?
Ronaldo…. Viva Ronaldoooooooooooooo.

Which player do you dislike in football the most and why?
Lee Robinson at Newhaven, purely because he scores so many goals against whichever side I’ve been playing for at that time. I’m sure he’s a top bloke off the pitch.

What do you do with your life away from the Beacon?
I regularly go to the gym, eat out and drink. I like weekends away, travelling around foreign destinations and holidays. All that in between watching as much live football as is humanly possible.

Which three famous people would you invite for dinner?
David Beckham – because he is an absolute idol of mine. Ricky Gervais and Karl Pilkington – I’m having them as a pair purely for the comical value. And Emily Ratajowski. I’m sure I don’t need to explain that one.



If you could attend one sporting event from any moment in history, which would you pick?
The 1999 Champions League final. Ole Gunnar Solksjaer winner in the 92nd minute v Bayern Munich. What a dream.

If someone was playing you in a movie about your life, who would it be?
Leonardo Di Caprio, Brad Pitt, Ryan Reynolds, Bradley Cooper… we’re all similar looks wise.
