The draw for the Peter Bentley League Cup has been made with Hassocks facing Southern Combination League Premier Division rivals Langney Wanderers at home in the second round.
Both teams received byes through the first round. It will be the first ever meeting in the competition between the Robins and Wanderers, with the two clubs never having met at senior level before Langney’s promotion to the Premier Division for last season.
If this latest instalment lives up to either of those two league fixtures then supporters will be in for a treat. September’s game at Priory Lane was an end-to-end affair in which the hosts raced into a 2-0 lead inside of 19 minutes though Lucas Mann and Gary Ingram.
Phil Johnson pulled one back for Hassocks five minutes later and the Robins eventually snatched a point right at the death when Jordan Badger headed home an 88th minute equaliser for 2-2.
It was the same scoreline when Wanderers came to the Beacon in March. On that occasion, it was Kenny McCreadie’s side’s turn to level things up late through Tyler Capon’s stunning 83rd minute strike.
Langney had gone ahead early in that one as well, Tyreece Daley opening the scoring after less than 180 seconds before goals from Dan Stokes and Johnson looked like they might be enough to give Hassocks all three points.
No date or time has been set for the fixture yet. The victors will go onto face Division One opponents in the the third round in the form of either Shoreham or one of Seaford Town or Mile Oak.
The Under 23s meanwhile will have to wait to find out who they face in the second round of the Under 23 League Cup. They have been given a bye into round two, where they will face the winners of Southwick v Lancing.
The Robins had a good run in the competition last season, making it all the way to the semi finals. Should they triumph in that second round meeting, then they can expect to face one of Seaford, Worthing United or Mile Oak in the quarter finals.
