Hassocks chairman Johnsy makes his NHS Donation

The final total has been calculated for Dave John’s donation to the Sussex Football 5K for the NHS Challenge with the Hassocks chairman set to hand over £160 to the cause.

Johnsy pledged to give £1 for every current and former Hassocks player who took part in the challenge that had played at the Beacon during his 30 years with the club.

129 individuals with Hassocks connections undertook their 5K to raise money for the NHS. Johnsy’s donation was then swelled when he agreed to pay a further £1 for every minute that his grandson, Ben took to complete the run.

Ben finished in a time of 29:01, with 29:01, with Johnsy also offering a further £1 for the friend who ran alongside Ben which added £31 to the cause.

The campaign was set up by Kevin Keehan and former Robins midfielder Scott Kirkwood with the aim of raising £3000 for the Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS charitable funds.

Non league and grassroots players from across Sussex undertake a 5k run, take a photo of themselves doing so and then make a donation to the NHS.

Within days, that £3000 target had been exceeded. Currently, Sussex football has raised over £45,000. Brighton & Hove Albion players and England internationals have got involved and the idea has been replicated across the country by many similar fundraising efforts.

The identity of Hassocks’ quickest player over 5K won’t come as a surprise to anyone, our marathon man James Westlake finishing 5k in an astonishing 15:52.
