The friendly action is done now for Hassocks ahead of the 2020-21 Southern Combination League season with the Robins drawing their final two warm up games.
Division One side AFC Varndeanians provided the opposition on Tuesday night at the Beacon. It turned out to be an extraordinary evening of football for those socially distanced supporters who attended.
Hassocks were in complete control early on before losing their grip a little, allowing Varndeanians to come back into the tie. The final score at the end of an entertaining game was 3-3 with Phil Gault netting a hat-trick. That took Gault’s pre-season goals total to seven following his return from Cuckfield Rangers.
It was Gault’s former club who provided the opposition in the final friendly. Hassocks named a young side to take on the 2018-19 Mid Sussex League champions with the game finishing 1-1. Joe Bull was on target for the Robins.
Hassocks play their first competitive match on Wednesday night away at Southern Counties East outfit Balham in the FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round. Kick off is at 7.45pm at AFC Croydon Athletic’s Mayfield Stadium.
The Robins’ opening Premier Division match comes on Saturday 5th September away at Alfold. It will the be the first ever meeting between the two sides after both last season’s matches at the Beacon and Alfold Recreation Ground fell to the weather on several occasions before the season was declared null and void.
Hassocks’ first home game of the campaign takes place on Tuesday 8th September when Lancing are the visitors. It is a tough start to the Beacon season for the Robins against the side who were top of the 2019-20 table prior to lockdown.
The Under 18s and the Ladies have both been given their start dates with their seasons due to commence on Sunday 13th September. Brad Sweetman’s Under 18s face a trip to Roffey whilst the Ladies will host Worthing at the Beacon.
