Hassocks’ final game before Christmas 2020 will see them attempt to play the Southern Combination League Premier Division fixture which Mother Nature hates as Alfold are the visitors to the Beacon.
In the 2019-20 season, five times Hassocks versus Alfold games were scheduled and five times they were postponed; four at Alfold Recreation Ground and one in Mid Sussex with a mixture of wet weather, cold weather and Covid-19 to blame.
The sides finally crossed swords on the opening day of the current campaign at Alfold Recreation Ground. The return match at the Beacon originally arranged for the end of October was then lost to wet weather, the only first team fixture so far that has been postponed.
This therefore is the second attempt to get it played. Should the game go ahead, it will be Alfold’s first visit to the Beacon, so there is a little bit of history to made as well.
Alfold this season
Alfold began their second season in the Premier Division like a train, sticking nine past Shoreham in their first ever FA Cup game and then defeating Hassocks 3-1 in the opening league match of the campaign.
Things haven’t gone quite so well since then and ‘Fold will actually arrive at the Beacon one place below the Robins in the table with five wins, two draws and four defeats from their 11 matches so far.
What they do have is a lot of firepower. Jack Munday’s talented squad includes Devon Fender and Sam Lemon who have nine goals apiece and Kelvin Lucas who has eight, giving Fold three players on the division’s top scorers chart.
With Tiago Andrade also on their books and former Dorking Wanderers goal machine Tom Tolfrey having recently signed, Alfold have the talent to outscore most teams in the division.
Last time Hassocks played Alfold
It was a difficult afternoon for Hassocks on their first ever visit to Alfold Recreation Ground in September. The Robins were well in the game at the hour mark with the scores locked at 1-1 after Charlie Pitcher cancelled out Tiago Andrade’s opener.
Alfold’s second from Sammy Clemments saw veteran goalkeeper Phil Wickwar limp off injured with defender Dan Turner taking over in goal and it was an uphill struggle from there. The hosts added a third as Andrade completed his brace for a 3-1 victory.
