Hassocks faced a tough ask in making it through to the first round proper and taking a step closer to Wembley in the FA Vase as they faced early Combined Counties Premier Division leaders Beckenham Town at the Beacon.
Becks arrived in Mid Sussex having won seven and drawn one of their eight league games to date as they look to mark their 125th anniversary next year with promotion to step four.
The Robins could therefore take heart from pushing their visitors all the way, giving Becks serious cause for concern at various points in a game which the visitors just about won 2-1.
Beckenham goalkeeper Mason Whitnell had to make several fine saves before his side took the lead with 30 minutes played through Junior Kaffo.
Tunde Aderonma doubled the advantage on 65 minutes but Hassocks did not trail by two for long. Within 120 seconds, Joe Bull halved the deficit with his first goal of the season.
The Robins threw everything at Beckenham after that but could not find another way past Whitnell. Hassocks’ best chance came when Andy Whittingham came on a charge from left back and with the home crowd urging him to shoot, let fly an effort from the edge of the area.
Whitnell was unfortunately equal to the effort, producing an acrobatic stop to turn it over the bar as the Robins saw their FA Vase adventure ended at the first hurdle.
