Season 2022-23 not quite done yet for Hassocks
Turns out the 2022-23 season is not quite over yet. With the decision belatedly taken to continue with the Sussex Principal RUR Charity Cup, Hassocks will now travel to Peacehaven & Telscombe in the quarter finals of the competition.
The game will take place on Tuesday 2nd May at the Window Workshop Sports Park, kicking off at 7:45pm. The winners will go onto play one of Littlehampton Town, Eastbourne United or Little Common in the semi finals.
Hassocks had been expecting to face one of Peacehaven or Lancing in the last eight. Lancing though have pulled out, meaning it is a date with the Tye.
Peacehaven took four points from the two Southern Combination League Premier Division meetings between the sides this season.
The Tye ran out 3-0 winners on the opening day of the campaign down on the south coast. That was followed by a 0-0 draw at the Beacon in February, Hassocks recording the first clean sheet of what would become a club-record sequence of five consecutive shutouts.
In terms of the RUR Cup, it is honours even. The Robins have faced Peacehaven three times in the competition, winning one, drawing one and losing one.
The draw and the loss came in the 1983-84 season. Hassocks and the Tye played out a 1-1 first round stalemate at Adastra Park, necessitating a replay back in Peacehaven which the hosts won 1-0.
Two seasons later and the Robins gained a measure of revenge via a 1-0 victory at the Sports Park, also in the first round.
Hassocks reached the semi finals of the competition last season, equalling their best ever run. Peacehaven meanwhile have quite the pedigree as eight time winners, with their most recent success coming in 2019.
