New faces help Hassocks hit five to fly past Hurst

Robins make it two wins from two in pre-season so far

Pre-season friendly number two sent Hassocks west along the A272 for a clash with Southern Combination League Division One side Billingshurst.

It proved to be a good workout for the Robins as in humid and sticky conditions, they ran out 5-2 winners with a couple of new additions to James Westlake’s first team squad getting on the scoresheet.

Kyle Woolven grabbed his first goal in Hassocks colours since arriving from AFC Varndeanians with a successfully converted penalty.

Last season’s Under 18s top scorer Alex Brewer also notched as he continues to make a mark on the senior side.

Brewer hit 21 goals in 21 matches for the Young Robins last season. He then rounded off his campaign by opening his account for the first team in the 4-1 win over Eastbourne Town which completed Hassocks’ Premier Division season.

Brewer was one a number of young players given an opportunity at Jubilee Fields, Westlake selecting his squad with one eye on a tougher test to come at Epsom & Ewell on Monday night.

Billingshurst proved generous hosts by putting through their own net with the other Hassocks goals coming from Jack Troak and Tom Frankland, the latter of whom was making it two from two matches so far.

Not wanting to be outdone in the hospitality stakes, the Robins delivered an own goal themselves. Billingshurst’s second consolation came from young Jack French, son of former Hassocks favourite Eddie.

One to make all those Robins supporters who remember Eddie captaining Sussex Under 18s whilst in the youth team at the Beacon and playing 99 times for the first team before onto Horsham feel old.

That aforementioned game with Epsom comes next, taking place at South Park;s King George’s Field. Kick off is at 7:30pm for anyone making the journey to Reigate and the Salts are asking for donations on the gate for Epsom Disabled Riding Association.
