Chedzey charges to seven goals as Hassocks hammer Oak
Where do you even start with what happened as Hassocks Under 18s won 9-0 against Mile Oak at the Beacon?
Six goals for the Robins inside the opening 12 minutes. Three of those from Cavan Chedzey, whose hat-trick was completed with the game only three minutes and 40 seconds old.
Chedzey ended the morning with seven for his efforts. Hassocks meanwhile moved to the top of the Southern Combination League Under 18 Central Division table.
If you fancy a bit of a laugh, ask Dave John which was his favourite goal. Johnsy was waiting for a cup of tea whilst Chedzey completed his treble.
Having not seen the first three goals, the Robins’ erstwhile chairman was also missed number six. Just a 5-0 win then for Johnsy.
What made the opening 12 minutes salvo in which everything Hassocks hit towards goal went in most surprising was it came after countless opportunities went begging in the 3-3 draw with Montpelier Villa last time out. If the Young Robins were told to improve their finishing, they certainly did that and then some.
There were three changes from the Villa game a fortnight ago. Chedzey certainly made the most of his opportunity after being promoted from the bench.
Ed Tobias and Oliver Goswamy were the other players coming into the starting XI. Alex Brewer and Evan China were absent and Ben Murray dropped down to the bench.
The first Hassocks goal arrived from the penalty spot. Kian Nandhra sped into the box and was wiped out, giving Chedzey the opportunity to open the scoring with less than 60 seconds played and the kettle still boiling for Johnsy.
Chedzey then added goals two and three to complete his hat-trick. Research continues into whether this sets some sort of world record for the quickest treble from kick off.
No Hassocks player has obviously managed faster, whilst Chedzey’s final haul of seven probably sets some sort of club record too.
Five of the first six goals came from Chedzey, his dominance of the scoresheet being broken by Kian Nandhra.
As the game approached the 15 minute mark, the mind boggled at what the final score might be. Sam Fernley at full back had not even touched the ball by this point with his side six goals to the good.
Oak deserve credit though for composing themselves and not conceding again in the first half, thanks in part to some tactical adjustments.
That new-found resistance was ended straight from kick off at the start of the second half. Chedzey completed his double hat-trick in the 46th minute with the help of an unfortunate deflection off a Oak defender.
Two more goals would be added over the remaining 44. Will Varley came off the bench to claim the eighth with Chedzey taking a break.
Oak’s relief at seeing him substituted was short-lived, however, as the Robins reintroduced Chedzey and he smashed an unstoppable rocket into the top corner for his seventh and the Robins’ ninth.
