Trigwell signs up for second season as Robins number one

Goalkeeper played every minute of record-breaking 2023-24 campaign for Hassocks

Goalkeeper Fraser Trigwell has signed up for a second full season as Hassocks number one having played every minute of the Robins’ record-breaking 2023-24 campaign.

In doing so, he became the first Hassocks player to be an ever-present since current head coach James Westlake in 2011-12.

Trigwell kept 15 clean sheets from 49 appearances across all competitions last season, including going the whole of March without conceding.

Only three Southern Combination Premier Division clubs had a better defensive record than the Robins – champions Steyning Town, runners up Eastbourne Town, third place Crowborough Athletic and Eastbourne United in sixth.

Hassocks pulled off quite the coup when convincing Trigwell to join from Loxwood in February 2022. where he had been number one for several seasons. His arrival at the Beacon gave Hassocks two quality goalkeeping options, along with James Shaw.

Trigwell played four times for the Under 23s as they closed in on the 2022-23 North Division title, including keeping a clean sheet on his first appearance in an 8-0 win over local rivals St Francis Rangers.

His first team debut came in March with Shaw unavailable for the 2-2 draw against Newhaven. When Shaw then left for Burgess Hill Town in the summer of 2023, Trigwell took over as number one. There has been no looking back since.

Trigwell played for Worthing United, Broadbridge Heath and Steyning Town prior to joining Loxwood in the summer of 2020.

He was one of the first signings made by Spencer Slaughter following the former Hassocks favourite’s appointment as manager at the Nest and played a starring role as the Magpies reach the final of 2021 Southern Combination Supplementary Shield competition.

Loxwood’s semi final against Newhaven at Woodside Road went to penalties following a 2-2 draw. In the shootout, Trigwell kept out three Dockers spot kicks to send Slaughter’s side through.

The final against Lancing also finished level. Trigwell saved another penalty but it was the Isthmian League-bound Lancers who lifted the trophy, winning 5-4 from 12 yards.
