Preview: Sunday action, 16/09/18

There’s no Saturday football this week for Hassocks as the first team are without a game, but both the Under 18s and Ladies side are in action on Sunday.

The Young Robins have it all to play for at Broadbridge Heath. Should they avoid defeat, it would mean that they will have gone a calendar year unbeaten in the league.

Hassocks’ last defeat came on September 24th last year, a 1-0 loss away at Southwick. With their next game after the trip to face the Bears not due to be until September 30th, it will take the Robins streak past the 365 days mark.

They’ve won 17 of the 18 games since that defeat at Old Barn Way with AFC Varndeanians the only side to take a point off the Robins and that was on September 27th. Victory on Sunday would therefore mean they’ve won every Central Division game for the past year.

It won’t be an easy game against a Broadbridge Heath side who have endured a mixed start to the season, winning one and losing one of their two games so far.

They were 5-3 winners away at Rottingdean Village last weekend having opened the season with a ridiculously entertaining 8-3 defeat at home to Upper Beeding.

Given that the Bears have seen 19 goals in their opening to games while Hassocks have been involved in three games totalling 15 goals, it is fair to assume that there should be plenty of entertainment on offer at Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre. Kick off is at 11am.

The Ladies meanwhile will be looking to build on their excellent 8-1 victory in the first South East Counties Women’s League game of the season against Steyning Town last week.

Town were playing in their first ever game against the Robins but Sunday’s opponents Oakwood are a much more seasoned side.

The Oaks kicked off their campaign last week with an 6-3 defeat at home to Mole Valley having been beaten 4-0 by Islington Borough in the FA Cup in their first game of the season. Hassocks of course went onto lost 4-2 to the same opponents in the next round a week later.

Oakwood finished in creditable fourth spot Division One East last season, nine points off the runners up Milford & Witley and 11 behind champions Lewes.

The game takes place at Tinsley Lane, Oakwood with kick off at 2pm.
