Report: Hassocks U23s 4-2 Roffey U23s

Chedzey runs riot with four goals to fire Robins back to winning ways

Cavan Chedzey ran riot over Roffey, scoring four times to fire Hassocks Under 23s back to winning ways.

The Robins had lost on their last outing at home to Lingfield a fortnight ago but showed no signs of any hangover, beating the Boars 4-2 at the Hassocks Hotel Beacon Ground.

Chedzey opened the scoring early on, setting the tone for his second four-goal haul of the campaign already. The forward also hit a hat-trick-plus-one in the 7-2 opening day win over Storrington.

Hassocks captain Ben Hicks on his first appearance of the season clipped a ball down the left channel for Chedzey to chase.

It looked pretty innocuous until the Roffey goalkeeper inexplicably came charging to the corner of his penalty area despite there being little hope of him getting the ball.

Chedzey cleverly used his first touch to chop the ball backwards, creating enough space from which he could scoop a shot over the head of the visiting number one and a covering defender and into the back of the net.

Dan Turner somehow put a header from an inswinging Tom Frankland corner wide before Chedzey made it 2-0 with another ridiculously composed finish.

Frankland and Oscar Kemp linked up to feed Chedzey. Positioned on the penalty spot, quick feet took a defender and the Roffey goalkeeper out of the game and allowed Chedzey to fire into the top corner.

Roffey pulled one back when Frankland’s attempted back pass to Fraser Trigwell was a little too short. Reece Nixon seized the ball before Trigwell could get there, rounding the goalkeeper and rolling home.

A similar mix up at the back from the Boars gave Chedzey his hat-trick goal with only half hour on the clock.

The Roffey goalkeeper’s pass out lacked the required power to reach a blue shirt, allowing Chedzey to charge onto it and finish first time.

A string of fine saves followed from the Boars goalkeeper as he redeemed himself, ensuring the score stayed at 3-1 to Hassocks going into half time.

Roffey were denied what looked a penalty not long after the break. Trigwell stood up well to save an initial one-on-one with a follow up effort appearing to be blocked by the arm of Hicks.

The Boars were now beginning to cause problems. Nixon hit the post followed by a free header being put wastefully wide.

It was somewhat against the run of play when Chedzey grabbed his fourth, picking out the far corner from the edge of the box.

Hassocks eased up after that with Trigwell needing to tip a free kick over at full stretch before Roffey grabbed their second consolation late on when Cameron Cooke finished a one-on-one.
