Shoreham await Hassocks in Peter Bentley Cup round three

Robins head to Edgar & Wood Stadium with quarter final spot up for grabs

A big week of knockout football for Hassocks kicks off in the third round of the Peter Bentley League Cup on Tuesday night.

The Robins head south to take on Shoreham at the Edgar & Wood Stadium with an away quarter final at either Petersfield Town or Roffey awaiting the winners.

Hassocks then travel to Camberley Town on Saturday in the first round proper of the FA Vase. The Robins do not have a particularly good record in either competition – but James Westlake’s current squad have developed a rather nice habit of re-writing the history books in recent seasons.

Shoreham this season

Former Hassocks striker Michael Death is back in the dugout at Shoreham for a second spell having resigned a year ago, not long after leading the Musselmen to the Division One title.

Shoreham currently sit 16th in the table with two of their three Premier Division wins this season coming in their past three matches.

A 2-1 win at Horsham YMCA on October 1st was followed by an even more impressive 1-0 victory over Newhaven at the weekend.

Sandwiched between those successes was a close-fought 1-0 defeat at Haywards Heath Town in which Death’s side caused the Bluebells their fair share of problems.

The danger Shoreham posed is further underlined by their results in knockout competitions. They eliminated Horsham YMCA from the Sussex Senior Cup and thrashed Pagham 4-1 in the previous round of the Peter Bentley.

Shoreham v Hassocks head-to-head

There have been 53 meetings between Robins and Musselmen with the FA Vase being the only competition in senior football the clubs have never played each other in.

Hassocks have 24 victories to their name and Shoreham 18, leaving 11 draws. The last time the sides met in the Peter Bentley Cup was a decade a go at the Edgar & Wood Stadium, ending in a routine 3-1 victory for the hosts.

Last time Hassocks played Shoreham

It proved a fruitful trip south for the Robins at the end of December as a 3-1 success provided the perfect response to the disappointing of losing 3-2 to Haywards Heath on Boxing Day.

Alex Fair got the party started by scoring against his former club with further goals from Josh Nandhra and a stunning distance effort from Tom Frankland completing the scoring.

Martin Bayo scored a consolation for Shoreham even more spectacular than Frankland’s to round off an entertaining clash.

How to get to the Edgar & Wood Stadium

Leave the A27 at the Portslade junction and then follow the Old Shoreham Road west towards Worthing. After passing over the Holmbush Roundabout to enter Shoreham, follow the road until you reach the hospital, taking a left just before it onto Hammy Lane.

At the bottom of this road, go right at the mini roundabout and the ground is immediately on your left. Street parking is available all around.

Please note that kick off is the slightly earlier time of 7:30pm.
