22 questions with Liam Benson

Liam Benson is enjoying a fruitful season so far since returning to the Beacon in the summer after a brief spell with Lancing.

He is Hassocks’ second top scorer on seven goals and is a popular figure around the club having progressed through the ranks having been part of the Robins Under 18’s side that won the Central Division title in the 2013-14 season.

Here he answers 22 questions, including who he thinks is the best trainer at the club and why he would remove offsides from the game if he was able to make one rule change.



Whats your nickname?
Benny, Bendo or Bendog. See the pattern? I’m pretty certain there is a few I don’t know about though.

What team do your support?
Brighton – they’re my Dad’s team.

Who was your footballing idol growing up?
David Beckham. His free kick against Greece to send England to the World Cup is my first ever footballing memory.

What is the most valuable medal or award in your trophy collection?
I enjoyed being part of a very good team when we won the Under 18s league in 2013-14 and I’ve also been lucky enough to win a couple of Player’s Player awards as well which are up there.

Best moment in your career?
There’s a few that stand out. Scoring on my first ever game in the FA Cup against Hollands and Blair last season, scoring two against Shoreham when we beat them 4-1 here the year they went onto win the league and winning the league with the Under 18s.

Most embarrassing moment of your career?
Getting benched for a 40 year-old-man when playing for the reserves

Funniest thing you’ve seen in football?
That’s a tough question! Maybe just watch some old clips of me trying to play football on YouTube for a laugh….

Best player you’ve ever played with?
I’ll be able to answer that one after this season.

Best ground you’ve ever played at?
The Beacon, of course. Silly question.

Favourite opposition team to play against?
Any team that I can score goals against!

Who is the best trainer at Hassocks?
Jack Wilkins always works really hard in training when he isn’t too busy punching himself about making a mistake.

Worst dressed player?
Alex Spinks. Not that he realises – he rates himself highly!

What’s the best thing about playing for Hassocks?
There’s lots of good people at the club and of course the facilities are fantastic.

What’s the best piece of footballing advice you’ve been given?
“Play between the goalposts.” I can’t remember who told me that, but I found it helpful.

If you could introduce one rule to football, what would it be?
No offsides. That would save me from being caught offside every two minutes.

Messi, Ronaldo or another? Who is the greatest of all time?
Messi for me.

Which player do you dislike in football the most and why?
Wilfried Zaha because he always, always manages to score against Brighton.



What do you do with your life away from the Beacon?
Work, gym and then a few beers at the weekend to unwind.

Which three famous people would you invite for dinner?
David Beckham, David Brent and Floyd Mayweather. Then you’ve got a bit of everything.

If you could attend one sporting event from any moment in history, which would you pick?
World Cup Final in 1966.

If someone was playing you in a movie about your life, who would it be?
Probably Leonardo Di Caprio or something…
