Former Hassocks midfielder Lewis Westlake is set to undertake an epic 145 mile charity bike ride from London to Amsterdam to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK.
Lewis, who moved from the Beacon to Loxwood in the summer, has signed up for Football to Amsterdam challenge, a 145-mile pedal pilgrimage to the Dutch capital which is backed by both the Football League and the League Managers Association.
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men, a disease which kills one man every 45 minutes – that’s two men who die during one game of football.
The ride is supported by grassroots players, professional football club staff and legends of the game with the aim of raising money to try and make prostate cancer a disease that the next generation need
not fear.
It’s a charity particularly close to both Lewis and his brother, Hassocks player and marathon man James Westlake’s heart given that their father Phil, a familiar face around the Beacon with his camera, was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2010 before receiving the all-clear in 2015 that he had won the battle against his awful disease.
Lewis is looking to raise £1200 in sponsorship and is well on the way to that target, helped by Loxwood dedicating their recent game with Eastbourne Town to his fund with collections being held throughout the day at Plaistow Road, Magpies boss Alex Walsh and his squad donating their expenses to the cause and a generous donation of £200 from visitors Town.
