Storm Dennis claims Hassocks’ clash with Wanderers

Hassocks’ Southern Combination League Premier Division meeting with Langney Wanderers has been postponed due to Storm Dennis.

The decision was taken following a morning referee’s inspection. The Beacon pitch was already waterlogged following another week of incessant rain hitting Mid Sussex and with further wet weather and high winds expected over the course of the next 48 hours from Dennis, the decision was taken to postpone.

Hassocks were looking to pick up back-to-back victories for the first time since the start of October. The Robins had rallied from being 2-0 down in side of seven minutes against Horsham YMCA on Tuesday night to win 3-2.

Spirits would have been high following that comeback which saw Phil Johnson and George Galbraith-Gibbons net in the 85th and 92nd minute respectively to spark jubilant scenes around the Beacon.

Langney’s visit would have been the fourth meeting between the sides in 2019-20. Hassocks won the first 2-0 in the FA Cup back in August while Wanderers went onto triumph 4-0 at Priory Lane in the league and 4-2 at the Beacon in the Peter Bentley League Cup, two games which took place within seven October days of each other.

Prior to this season’s frequent clashes, Hassocks had only faced Langney twice in competitive action. Wanderers enjoyed their first ever campaign in the top flight of the Southern Combination League in the 2018-19 season in which both meetings ended in 2-2 draws.

Langney’s second season in the Premier Division is going extremely well so far as they chase a top 10 finish under the guidance of new boss Simon Colbran. They are currently ninth in the table with nine wins, seven draws and nine defeats from 25 games.

No new date has been set for the tie yet. Given the hasty nature with which YMCA’s visit was rearranged just 10 days after the original fixture with Peter Buckland’s side was postponed, please keep an eye on our website and social media profiles for details.

With the season entering its final couple of months and further bad weather expected, a similarly quick turnaround could be agreed by the Robins and Wanderers in order to get the game played.

The postponement follows the Under 23s League Cup game away at Southwick on Thursday night falling to the weather. The Ladies’ trip to Ashford tomorrow afternoon is not expected to go ahead either, given that Storm Dennis will be at its height when that game is due to take place.

Hassocks are next due in action on Tuesday night against Little Common. Kick off at the Beacon is 7.45pm. We will update you with news of the likelihood of that one going ahead as and when we have it, so again please consult this website and our Facebook and Twitter pages.
