Bears’ visit to the Beacon caged by weather

The wet winter weather shows no signs of getting Hassocks a break anytime soon with the Robins’ suffering a fourth consecutive postponement.

Broadbridge Heath had been due to the visit the Beacon tomorrow afternoon but the match has been called off 24 hours early.

The pitch is currently waterlogged and with further rain expected overnight and tomorrow as Storm Jorge arrives, there is no prospect of it being playable.

Clubs normally have to wait until the day of the game before making a decision, but the Southern Combination League have sensibly relaxed that rule due to the relentless rain of the past month.

The postponement means that Hassocks have now not played a competitive fixture for three weeks. They last kicked a ball on Tuesday 11th February when Horsham YMCA were defeated 3-2 at the Beacon in dramatic circumstances.

YM had gone 2-0 ahead inside the seven minutes. The Robins battled back though and two goals in the final five minutes from Phil Johnson and George Galbraith-Gibbons completed a memorable turnaround, completing a 3-2 win.

Since then, home games against Langney Wanderers and Little Common were both lost to Storm Dennis. That was followed by the postponement of last weekend’s visit to AFC Uckfield Town.

As a result of all these cancellations, Hassocks are already facing the prospect of playing on three consecutive Tuesdays throughout March, starting with the rearranged trip to Uckfield on Tuesday 17th.

There seems little prospect of cramming Broadbridge Heath’s visit into a packed March schedule, leaving a midweek date in April as the most likely date.

The Robins are next due in action on Tuesday night when they make their first ever trip to Premier Division newcomers Alfold.

That game has already been postponed on three occasions stretching all the way back to November. Should Storm Jorge do its worst over the weekend, then there will again be doubts about whether the tie at Alfold Recreation Ground will go ahead.
