Preview: Hassocks v AFC Uckfield Town, 17/03/20

Hassocks and AFC Uckfield Town will bid to clear some of their fixture backlog as the Oakmen have surrendered home advantage for this Tuesday night’s scheduled Southern Combination League Premier Division game.

The match had been due to take place at the Oaks but it has now been moved to the Beacon with kick off at 7.30pm. The T Bar and the Robins Bar will both be running a normal matchday service with Uckfield operating the turnstiles and supplying a matchday programme.

Originally, this game had been due to take place on Saturday 22nd February but fell to a waterlogged pitch. The Oaks was again waterlogged at the weekend when Town were due to face Steyning Town and our opponents don’t believe it will have suitably recovered in time for Tuesday night.

The Beacon too was also flooded at the weekend, ensuring that Alfold’s visit to Mid Sussex was postponed. That meant that Hassocks have played just once since February 11th, a 3-2 defeat to Lingfield on the 3G surface at Steyning Town’s Shooting Field last weekend.

Uckfield for their part have been much more active, racking up seven points from their last three league games to climb into eighth spot in the table.

A 3-1 win over Eastbourne United was followed by a 1-0 success at Satldean United and a hugely creditable 1-1 draw with title hopefuls Eastbourne Town.

The seventh placed finish achieved by Anthony Storey and his players last season was the club’s highest ever league position and with games in hand on most of the sides around them, they look well placed to eclipse it again this year.

Hassocks meanwhile will be hoping for a better evening than they experienced when the Oakmen came to the Beacon in November.

Liam Baitup scored twice for the visitors as they ran out 4-0 winners with Bailo Camara and an own goal also on target. The Robins dominated the final 15 minutes but it was a case of too little, too late by that point in proceedings.

That latest result took Uckfield into the lead in the head-to-heard record between the two. The Oakmen now have nine wins to Hassocks’ eight from 17 fixtures.

The mathematicians among you will have deduced that means there has never been a draw, so this is one game you definitely do not want on your coupon.

Given the current coronavirus situation, we would advise anyone wanting to attend to check beforehand whether the game will actually be going ahead.

We’ll endeavour to keep you updated via both this website and our own social media channels.
